A year in our village

We would like to explain you how we spend our time. Although most of our life consists of everyday labour and duties, there are some special days and festivities:

Winter

This season shows us how small mankind is. It is impossible to gain victories in the eternal fight against snow and frost. Sometimes we need wheel-chains to get home. The firewood in the shed always disappears faster than we expected. Nevertheless, winter has also its positive sides:

Climbing the hilltop Javořice at Silvester
The Czech Hikers Association (Klub Českých Turistů) organises at New Year´s Eve an ascent of the Javořice. At the top, all participants obtain tea, chocolate-biscuit and a souvenir, a button from the factory in Studená. When there is enough snow, it is possible to go cross country skiing, otherwise people go by foot. The official starts are from Řásná and Studená. Our own delegation, with partially its own track, leaves at noon from Lhotka.
Skiing, cross country skiing, races
At the initiative of our neighbour, innkeeper Houser, there are annually organised cross crounty races for individuals and relay races for teams with three members. Last year the weather refused to cooperate and just before we intended to have the races, the snow melted away. So, perhaps next year.
Balls
January and February are the traditional months of the ball-season. Several organisations, like the fire brigade, the huntsmen, the municipality, schools and even private firms, organise balls. The entrance fees are usually about 100 Kč, bands plays dance music and mostly there is a rich tombola.
Carnival
We have no carnival traditions in Lhotka, but other villages in the surroundings do. There are dresses, masks, ceremonies and everything else belonging to carnival. This year carnival will be the 21th and 22th of February. At Saturday there will be parades in Hodice, Růžená, Pavlov, Nová Ves and Sumrakov, at Sunday in Telč.

Spring

Spring begins with the birth of lambs. This is a period of much work and many worries, but since those births are the result of a half year of taking care of the animals, the pleasure of a good result outweighs the troubles.

Easter
At the Czech countryside, with Easter, all girls are traditionally hit on their buttocks with fresh willow-twigs by the boys and young men of the village. This is an old recepy to keep the girls and women young, fresh and affable. To thank the children for this favour, the girls present them sweets, eggs and sometimes drinks. The happy eyes of our children and their first words at returning home “Granny, we´ve hit our basket completely full!” made us understand that this tradition will not cease soon.
Bicycle races:

The Race of the King of the Javoøice (O Krále Javoøice
A road-race for teams of three cyclists, from Lhotka to the top of the Highlands, the Javořice, in rounds of 20 km. Men ride 1.5 round (30 km). Details.
The Race of the King of Štamberk (O Štamberského krále)
A cross country race for individuals in rounds of about 5 km in the surroundings of Lhotka. The main category rides 5 rounds, the other categories less
Mass in the open air
Because our village has no church and not even a chapel, once a year, there is a mass in the small park with the memorial for the dead of the First World War. This always happens at the holiday of the Holy Trinity, this year at the 6th of June.
The banquets of Roštejn
At the 5th and 6th of June of this year the Banquets at the castle of Roštejn will take place for already the 7th time. Fish-growing being one of the traditional branches in the county of Telč, this year the “Friends of Roštejn” will organise banquets with mainly fish dishes.

Details.

Summer

Theater
It is starting to become a tradition, that at the holidays in July (the 5th and 6th), at the courtyard of his own house no. 39, Mr. Dušan Šimek and his friends (...) organise a theater performance....
Country music

Autumn

Autumn is the time of the harvest and the preparations for the winter. We gather and prepare fire-wood, fruit, vegetables, mushrooms, potatoes, beets (both for our cattle and for the game in the woods) and we find out, which of our plans we have not succeded to realise during the season. The grass is not as green anymore and the sun often hides behind the clouds. But when it shows it face, the autumn is marvellous: colloured leaves at the trees, mushrooms everywhere, the fishing out of ponds and lakes, wide views over the landscape... If you decide to visit us in the autumn, you may make use of these offers of ours:

The barn of Kozlov
Late in the afternoon of the first Saturday of September (this year the 4th), there uses to be organised a bluegrass festival in the game-keepers lodge about 1 km from Lhotka. There gather several bands and the gains are offered to some humanitary organisations. The festival of this year will be
the ...th.
Country fair and the patron of the village
In the village of Mrákotín the population administration of Lhotka takes place and the parish church of St.Jiljí stands. Therefore we consider the country fair at the first Sunday following the nameday of St. Jiljí (the 1rd of September) also a little as our own festivity.
